Thus, when we conceive of a sensation as something non-conceptual, we keep it from being truth-evaluable. The sensation of a red object is not true or false; it simply occurs. 32 And that would imply that the Given cannot be non-conceptual.
She might not know how to classify it. Even if we grant that she is conscious of the sensation, it does not follow that she is aware of it as a sensation of redness. 31 Nor does it help to suppose that the sensation is not simply the image on the retina but something “in” one’s consciousness. For even then it’s possible that she doesn’t know what she is sensing; she might simply be conscious of something happening. According to the Pittsburgh School, the general problem here is that something non-conceptual cannot be one’s basis for further reasoning.
