19 Historians then could reasonably remain insistent that they were tracking down the truth about the past, and that, just like scientists again, they were revealing only what was already there awaiting their discovery; they were penetrating to the reality of the past, to what was the case, to the truth. The scientistic aspirations of history can thus be seen to be a part of the much wider, and hugely optimistic, modernist enterprise. A belief in a directing God, making appropriate interventions to ensure a moral progression through time, may, from the eighteenth century on, have been largely eroded; but all was not lost, when a ready replacement could be seen in the form of a more specifically human progress.
In his wide-ranging examination (and actual historicisation) of the condition of postmodernity in 1989, David Harvey lists ‘art, literature, social theory, psychology, and philosophy’ as ‘other realms’ sharing the postmodern concerns of architecture and urban design; but no mention there of history itself. Charles Jencks edited The Post-Modern Reader as ‘An Anthology of a World Movement’ in 1992. By that publication date, the blurb claimed, postmodernism was already ‘embracing all areas of culture’, so entries were included on literature, art, architecture, film, sociology, politics, geography, feminism, science and religion; but history remained conspicuous through its absence and 27 FEAR (THE PRESENT) presumed immunity to the otherwise all-embracing world movement.
And that psychological point has serious implications for historical study. If ‘scientism’ in the context of history implies a belief that historians need to emulate scientists (to adopt their professional procedures and even their assumed moral characteristics), ‘centrism’ (our other main modernist ingredient) can be defined as the related presupposition that it is possible to adopt one single (central) position (standpoint) – both geographical and chronological – from which science or history (or theology or anything else) may be properly done.
