The majority of the 500 species have no industrial use and have had little or no role as planted trees. Industrial plantations Large-scale industrial plantations of eucalypts are a phenomenon of the last three decades. Major industrial plantings of eucalypts have taken place in Brazil, South Africa, Spain, and Portugal. Brazil has become synonymous with large-scale, fast-growing eucalypts, and South Africa is one of the best examples of the economic benefits that can flow from such plantations when they are well managed.

These smaller units lend themselves to more complex management, and so may have better prospects for maximizing yields and improving the ecological environment by the use of mixtures of different species. Improved growth of eucalypts mixed with the nitrogen-fixing Paraserianthes falcataria has been reported (DeBell et al. 1989), and it is probable that Acacia and other genera could also grow satisfactorily with eucalypts and produce a beneficial outcome. There are also opportunities for management of understory plants, either as crops or to assist nutrient cycling and increase biodiversity of plantations.
