I can also say, only thus did a transcendental doctrine of consciousness become possible and together with it a most intimate understanding of the apperceiving of objects of every category, which occurs in psychological interiority, and further a most intimate understanding of all verifying performances, as logical, axiological, and practical. Consciousness, intentionality, revealed its true essential species only in work with this orientation. Previously there prevailed in psychology, and still now in all natural-scientifically oriented psychology, an interpretation of psychic life which regarded it as obviously an analogue of a physical natural event, as a constantly self-transforming complex of elements.

That Lotze had already noticed the a priori within the scope of the immanent sense-qualities and that logic passed as an a priori discipline in the unclarity of its noetic-noematic interpretation, means nothing in this respect. There had not been a single actual beginning of a phenomenological a priori psychology and no notion even of its possibility. That holds also for Brentano. In previous times admittedly, a priori psychology was much discussed, namely, in the Leibnitzian-Wolffean school of the eighteenth century.

Nevertheless, transcendental phenomenology has this characteristic, that everyone of its propositions admits of being transformed into an a priori psychological proposition in the natural sense. What was also not seen was the fact that a phenomenological method essentially similar can also ground a naturally objective a priori psychology from the start, if one only omits the radical change of attitude by which alone the transcendental can become thematic and if one does not permit the co-functioning of methodic intentions relating to the transcendental, nor of philosophically ultimate questions, which lead quite beyond the normal natural science.
