Section 12(1) states: `Every HA shall make arrangements for seeing that they receive from a) medical practitioners, registered nurses and midwives b) other persons with professional expertise and experience of health care advice appropriate for enabling the HA effectively to exercise the functions conferred or imposed on them under or by virtue of this or any other Act'.
A new contract was only to be granted if it was `necessary or desirable' to secure adequate provision in the neighbourhood. The main law is now found in the National Health Service (Pharmaceutical Service) Regulations 1992. The Regulations have been amended several times.
