Acoustic spectroscopy of paramagnetic centers in insulator and semiconductor crystals is based on the application of hypersound waves for investigating the electron energy spectrum structure and the electron–phonon interaction of paramagnetic centers based on hypersound acoustic paramagnetic resonance (APR) spectroscopy. The resonant absorption of hypersound corresponding to APR in dielectric or semiconductor crystals containing paramagnetic centers is associated with induced transitions between the levels of the electron paramagnetic centers’ energy spectrum, and the APR line intensity (resonant absorption value) is proportional to the electron–phonon coupling of the center.
The mechanism of APR or the transfer of acoustic vibrational energy to unpaired spins is the same as the mechanism involved in EPR relaxation via singlephonon processes. They both involve the electron– phonon interaction, and the intensity of an APR line, or the hypersound resonant absorption coefficient, is proportional to the strength of this interaction. The selection rules of the allowed transitions in the hypersound wave field, which are determined by the electron–phonon interaction, have a quadrupole character.
Alternative materials are barium titanate, lithium tantalate, bismuth germanate, and piezoelectric ceramics. At frequencies in the UHF range the resonance acoustic wave transducers are applied at the samples under investigation, or at the sound wave guides in the form of thin lms of ZnO, CdS and other piezoelectric materials. The alternating electric field is applied and recorded at the piezoelectric element either by the direct insertion of the latter into the electromagnetic circuit, or with the help of UHF 19 resonators or transmission lines.
