Experienced elementary school teachers were more likely to mention interpersonal qualities as in the following statement:"She is very, very caring.
She really cares. " Page 11 Our baseline interviews also suggested that elementary teachers had more opportunities to work in schoolwide committees than did secondary teachers. All of the interviews contained many references to the importance of positive attention and praise from administrators, and female teachers expressed this need somewhat more often than male teachers. In the three elementary schools the principals (all female) appeared to focus more on establishing and maintaining positive interpersonal relationships than did their male and secondary counterparts.
Our responsibility, therefore, is to tell our combined interpretation of the story as honestly as possible, incorporating the voices and viewpoints of as many as possible, so that others who are teachers, principals, and university educators may leam what they will from our experiences as they, too, work toward the goals of transforming relationships among educators, as well as the structure of educational institutions.
