In his pursuit of a surer foundation for our knowledge of the world, to form the basis for what we should now call a scientific account of things, Descartes, as we shall see, came to separate the ‘mind’ or ‘knowing subject’ from the material world which is the object of knowledge. Thus, the ultimate outcome of Descartes’s arguments was a dualist account of the world, as consisting of purely non-physical ‘subjects’ or ‘minds’ contemplating from the outside a world of purely physical ‘objects’ which had no element of the mental in it.

So the design is that of a species, and is defined by those things which members of that species typically do, and by so doing achieve certain species-typical ends. Disease is by the same token a deviation from species-typical functioning. However, as Fulford shows in his analysis of non-biological functioning (Fulford 1989: Chapter 6), we must distinguish between what he calls ‘functional doing’ and ‘adventitious doing’: that is, between things which are done as part of what the thing was designed to do, and those which it just happens to do.

To the extent that mental disorders have similar biological effects, then our reasons for finding them undesirable are like those which we have for finding bodily illnesses undesirable, and unlike those which we have for being distressed by our own or other people’s racism (moral reasons), or poverty (economic reasons), or unhappiness (which just seems intrinsically undesirable). Likewise, the kind of help we seek in order to be rid of this undesirable element in our CRITIQUE OF THE PHYSIOLOGICAL MODEL lives is the same as when we have diabetes or measles: medical treatment, rather than moral sermons, or financial assistance, or a shoulder to cry on.
