Working together, the team identified several areas where computer technology could be useful to their church. Then they created a needs list for each area of church work. Next they converted those lists into detailed plans. Finally, the team began implementing them. It was not always easy. Sometimes team members had different points of view. Money was not immediately available to accommodate everyone’s wish list. Bad weather and less-than-perfect service technicians also complicated their process.

What we learned forms the basis for much of what follows. The Indianapolis Center for Congregations continues to work with congregations in the area of technology. This work has grown out of our experience with CMGI and our ongoing effort to provide up-to-date information on the state of technology and its possible implications for churches, synagogues, and mosques. The calls keep coming. ERROR MESSAGES One important thing we tell congregations is that there is a great deal of misinformation about congregational technology.

Stories like these are one reason that in January 1998 the Indianapolis Center for Congregations embarked on its ambitious project of teaching congregations how to use technology to enhance congregational ministry. Our main goal was to provide a broad background of what was available for congregations technologically. We did not have a particular implied or explicit theology—we wanted congregations to think practically and theologically about computer use. That included all aspects of using technology in congregations—desktop publishing, member records, accounting, word processing, communications, the Internet, presentations, education, and so on.
