Isn’t our whole approach to faith based on a simple transaction: what we lack and need he has in abundance and can provide? This is, at one level, a poem about a well-known story in the gospels—the story of Jesus and his disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee when a sudden storm arises.
What are those uncles of Oliver’s poem muttering about, if not this “peculiar” troublemaker? Why do the women walk away, if not to keep the peace, as women so often feel called to do?
