44 State, Society and Memories of 17 June 1953 In 1984 the SED city leadership commissioned the composition of a guide to the street names of Magdeburg in which the origins of the names were to be explained. ’10 Hans-Waldbach-Straße was not included in the manuscript. In the final published text none of the three streets appeared (Buchholz, 1985). Only Peter Momber (born 1938) and Erwin Strempel (born 1932) stated that they had known who the men behind the street names were. Herr Momber lived in a street very close to Georg-GaidzikStraße and Gerhard-Händler-Straße.

Yet school pupils in the GDR apparently showed very little enthusiasm for the subject of 17 June 1953. Frau Ritter claimed that pupils knew from their parents and grandparents that what was in the history textbook was ideologically coloured and was not the whole story. Herr Thiel was of the opinion that no pupils were interested because of the content of the syllabus. He called the class ten history syllabus a ‘punishment for teachers and pupils alike’. Both teachers said that the syllabus up to this point had been full of interesting subjects like the Nazi period and regional events, like the destruction of Magdeburg during the Second World War.

Whoever opposed their terror was beaten according to the tried and tested methods of the SA and SS, as our picture shows’ (MVS, 1953h, p. 2). The MVS did report on one very specific case relating to the events of 17 June 1953 in Magdeburg. On 27 August 1953 the newspaper reported on the trial of Ernst Jennrich. The MVS described Jennrich as a ‘submissive tool of the imperialists’ who had committed ‘a most reprehensible and despicable crime’. It described him as ‘one of those bandits with whom they [the West] hoped to carry out “Day X” in order to trigger a civil war’.
