CONTRAINDICATIONS & CAUTIONS • Contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to these drugs. • Carbamazepine is contraindicated within 14 days of MAO inhibitor use. • Use cautiously in patients with blood dyscrasias. Also, use barbiturates cautiously in patients with suicidal ideation. • In pregnant women, therapy usually continues despite the fetal risks caused by some anticonvulsants (barbiturates, phenytoin). In breast-feeding women, the safety of many anticonvulsants hasn’t been established. Children, especially young ones, are sensitive to the CNS depression of some anticonvulsants; use cautiously.
