The world of atoms and objects was a world of predictability and control where plans could be made and outcomes described, but this new in-between world is one in which the most important elements of change are not clear and distinct objects that can be located and defined: they are networks and intersections of people who cannot be located; they are on the move and innovating in order to thrive in a new world. These are networks and innovations (like IEDs) that cannot be predicted with any accuracy, but what they are doing is transforming the landscape of our reality.

The explanations of atoms were given in terms of distinct, separate “objects” interacting with one another. This idea of independent, separate objects was one of the key inner maps of the modern period. We built almost all of our understanding of life around this model. Human beings were separate and independent individuals interacting with one another; organizations and institutions were perceived in the same way. What we always saw, therefore, were these independent objects. This meant we were always looking for way to define, manage, and control independent objects in order to get the outcomes we wanted.

Others quickly adopt scripts Maps Shaping Our Imaginations in Modernity 17 for the new stage. Most struggle, however, trying to make the scripts they were given work again. Not everyone has been shaped by all parts of our North American cultural maps. Within the church, for example, some groups have steadfastly resisted the frameworks of modernity, seeking to describe themselves as a contrast society (Mennonites, for example), while the great bulk of Protestant churches have drunk deeply of modernity with its emphases on techniques of control and predictability (programs that guarantee growth and “health,” such as Natural Church Development or Forty Days of Purpose) and focus on the individual (“needs-centered” and “seeker-centered” churches).
