However, for many women the social constraints of the period did not allow any form of public activity. Yet women’s lives within the domestic sphere were being affected by changes in the public sphere. It was not just the individual but the whole household which got involved in the movement. In these circumstances, purdah-bound women were compelled to take cognizance of the movement, since members of their family were participants in it. I will argue that the domestic site underwent changes as a consequence of developments in the public (political) world and became a significant location of women’s nationalist activities.
