We tried to get our X-ray crystallographers to help us, but they couldn’t give us a conclusive answer; apparently you can get cholesterol crystallizing in a variety of forms. We thought that if it were cholesterol the crystals would give a positive Schultz reaction, but we actually found a Schultz reaction all round the crystals, while the crystals themselves were inert.
