Except for my senior thesis, a silly, banal study of the Revolution of 1848 in France, offered to me by a professor who preferred diplomacy and politics to intellectual history. I arrived at Brandeis with French as my foreign language, having had a particularly good teacher in junior high school. In European history courses I tended to research French topics because I could read the language. In retrospect, I don’t fully understand my passivity. Many of my fellow students wrote on the likes of Nietzsche, Marx, and Freud.
My first book was at last published in 1982. Landscape in this paradigm is not mere terrain; it is terrain shaped and reshaped by changing culturally specific uses. Landscape in the usage I was establishing resides less in physical forms than in the meanings that those culturally shaped forms have for the inhabitants. The first part of the book showed the colonial landscape that the English (and the Africans) made, largely in erasure of the one from which the Algonquian Indians had been expelled.
